Light Bicycle is a professional carbon cycling components manufacturer for riders, bike shops, retailers, and established brands. Founded in 2011 by IT professional Daodao, carbon wheel engineer Daniel Fang and customer service specialist Nancy Yu, we started by selling our rim designs direct-to-consumer, with the mission to offer high-quality carbon wheels at a more affordable price. In 2012, we launched lightbicycle.com to provide easy access to these rims for riders worldwide. However, we quickly realized that by outsourcing the production of our rims the products were falling short of our standards and business values. We decided to pivot and allocate our resources to establishing an independent factory in 2013. With this investment, we were then able to directly monitor and control our rim production throughout all parts of the process, employ our strict quality standards, and provide in-depth customization services for customers. Our client range subsequently began to expand from individual riders to OEM and ODM businesses that share the same production values and quality standards.
With our factory and vision established, we grew our team to ensure we could effectively execute all steps of the process in-house: from the carbon layup, CNC drilling, to e-commerce, engineering, and sales. With this consistent business base, we moved towards offering our manufacturing services and expertise to other brands: providing end-to-end solutions including product design, material sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, logistics, and post-order support. This service greatly shortens the supply chain and is more startup-friendly for new, small or independent brands. We find great value in supporting small businesses to expand their product range with less overhead and fewer obstacles.
2018 is a milestone in our history, being the year we introduced our new Pro rim series with the innovative paintless finish. Traditionally, a raw carbon rim removed from its mold can be inconsistent, with certain imperfections that require post-production treatments like sanding and coating for a flawless final product. Our paintless series revamps the mold, material, and layup methods, resulting in carbon products with a beautiful finish fresh out of the mold and no need for additional treatments. This is a significant innovation in our business sustainability program, though we still offer both production methods to cater to the widest array of production priorities and budgets.

Light Bicycle was founded. We targeted the mountain bike market after thorough market research and introduced our first product - the first-ever Chinese-made 29” MTB rim.

We built our own factory with modern amenities to have direct oversight of the entire production process. We began as a trader, and after working with third-party factories we quickly saw the need for our own facilities: we started to plan for a self-owned workshop for more consistency in quality.

Innovations in product designs and manufacturing methods continue: 27.5” sized MTB rims, hookless design, tubeless bead lock, asymmetric profile, fat bike rim, flyweight series, tubeless compatibility, and removing the rim bed patching and curing carbon ring. We grew our IT department to develop an ERP system for business process management.

A group of cycling industry professionals from North America joined our Chinese team and formed our North American office. With a local warehouse stocking our most popular products, we were able to offer responsive, accessible service for riders in Canada and the USA.

After nearly two years of development, we revamped the manufacturing process with new molds, presses, and production methods, and introduced our paintless series, believing sustainability is our responsibility.

The innovative X-Flow road rims and S-Flow MTB rims are released to the market and were important milestones in product design for Light Bicycle. We expanded our product range with the first gravel-specific frameset and triathlon/track full-disc rear wheels. We opened a new warehouse in France to solve prominent international shipping concerns.

We expanded the tri/track category with carbon tri-spokes. In the MTB sector, we innovated ultralight, high-performing rims (250g apiece). The launch of our first-ever eMTB-specific rim responded to the ever-growing e-bike market. We also introduced carbon spokes for riding quality upgrades. A new division in Australia improved our customer support quality.
Quality can never be compromised, even in the pursuit of innovation. Our high standards for product quality and consistency were the motivating factors for creating our own factory to begin with, and this priority still stands. We ensure every item passes a committed QC process in between every stage of production, and a thorough final inspection. From product weight to performance and aesthetics, our mission is to deliver lightweight and strong carbon products to the market with a premium look and feel.
